(Free in the sense of freedom)
A tale of two cities is among the first and the best romantic historical fiction written in English literature. Though the story line mainly revolves around the French revolution, but the politics have little significance on the plot. This is the story of personal relationships, love, commitment and sacrifice in most troubled times. This book contains comedy, love as well as suspense; altogether this is a piece of sentimental entertainment. Charles Dickens has described the barbarian and brutal law of France which led to the French revolution and the parallel life in England in the introductory chapters of this book. The life of the main characters of this story somehow relates to both France and England and their lives terribly influenced with the political anarchy in this region.
This story revolves around three characters Charles Darnay and his wife Lucie Manette and Sydney Carton. The story begins with the Lucie Manette search for his father who was imprisoned in France for eighteen years. After few years, in London Lucie Manette marries Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat and he goes to France in search of his old servant. In France he was caught by the revolutionaries for the crime committed by his aristocratic family. Sydney Carton, a young English barrister who is a friend of Charles Darnay and loved Lucie deeply went to France and helped Charles to escape the wrath of the revolutionaries and remained in his place and got killed at the hands of revolutionaries.
